We decided it would be best to link you straight to the FAQ page. If you do not have a question and simply want to know more about the class, try the about page. faq for prospective studentsHow do the units work for the course? You will recieve one unit for the lecture and one unit for the discussion. Since the discussion is optional, you can receive a total of 1-2 units for the course. So what does this mean? If you're in the lecture and not in the discussion, you get one unit. If you're in the lecture and discussion, you get two units. If you happen to be one of the few who has taken lecture in the past and would like to take ONLY the discussion (note that the former is a prerequisite for this scenario) then you receive one unit. Note however that if you have taken the lecture in the past, you are more than welcome to take it again. Can I get the CCN?No. We are running this course via an application process. If you are not expressly admitted to the course and you find a way to register, you will be dropped. Do I really need a DSLR?For the lecture you do NOT need a DSLR. A camera of some sort would certainly make the class more relevant, but one could learn a lot without it. For the discussion, we require a DSLR or a camera with sufficient manual control (typically this is not found in a point-and-shoot camera). "Sufficient" means manual control of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and preferrably metering and focus points. If you have questions, I recommend you contact us. I am not currently aware of any reasonable source from which a student could rent cameras, except for your friends. Borrowing a friend's camera is a reasonable alternative, if you have nice friends. I'm relying on this class for X, but that's okay since I'm sure to get in, right?Unfortunately, no. As this is a popular class, it is quite possible that we will be overwhelmed by student interest. We are expanding the sections this semester, but still anticipate a strong turnout. That being said, please do not rely on getting into this class for X, whatever X may be. As with most other classes on campus (DeCals in particular) space is limited and backup plans should always be considered. BUT I REALLY NEED THESE UNITS, DUDESSorry, we can only accept a certain number of people, which means a certain number of people will not get in. There is no way to get around that. When is class?
The first day of class is January 23rd. Is this course graded or P/NP?This course is P/NP and the grading system and is mentioned in the syllabus, which will be posted on the DeCal website (and here) when appropriate. faq for current studentsHow do I use flickr?First, register an account if you don't already have one (Yahoo! ID - use an existing one if you can). This is free! There is no need to pay for a "pro" account! After you have an account [login, then] use the tabs to go to "Upload." Click "Choose photos or video," find your files and upload them. Make sure that after you upload them, you put in a title for each photo with the following format: "Name - Assignment Number" (for example: "Kellen Freeman - Assignment 1"). You have now uploaded your photos to flickr, but you have not put them on the group page yet! After you have joined the group, use the "Groups" tab to find our group, called "Digital Photography DeCal, Fa11". Then, click right next to "Group Pool," where it says "Add something?". Select your pictures and add them to the group. As long as you didn't forget to title them, then you're done! How are we graded for the lecture?Students will be graded on weekly quizzes and must score 50% or better (cumulatively) to pass. How are we graded for the discussion?Students will be graded on weekly or semi-weekly photo assignments and a final project. Students must completely all but 2 semi-weekly assignments and MUST complete the final to pass the course. How do quizzes work? After each lecture, a quiz will be posted relating to the material covered. Each student will have until the day of the lecture to complete it. This means that once the next lecture starts, it will be too late to start the quiz! Quizzes will be distributed via bSpace and will be posted and announced before the end of the week, but typically the day after lecture. Quizzes are obviously open note, "open internet", etc., and do not have a time limit once started (except that they must be completed by 5:29:59PM). Where can I see the quizzes? And the syllabus?Quizzes and the syllabus will be distributed via bSpace and as such will not be available on this website. Where can I get the lecture PowerPoints? The .ppt lecture slides will be posted one week after the corresponding lecture (i.e., after the quiz is due). You can find them on this website at the "Lessons" page under the category for current students. |
