Well I fell off the wagon with this series for a bit, but I’m back now to discuss the next batch of favorite games.

401-500:

These are all what I refer to as really solid games. They’re maybe not the most amazing in terms of hype, but they’re ones I always enjoy playing and will likely stay in my collection for a long time.

Winner

#401 – Love Letter (2019): Love Letter is a great game. Small and simple. Then I got Love Letter Premium. More roles, higher player count, more of a great thing. Except it wasn’t. The more players slowed the game down, and the new roles were hard to keep up with. So I went back to the original.

Then in 2019 came the remake and it became the best of both worlds. Small and compact, but expanded just enough. A couple more roles, room for 2 more players. Everything just works right. It’s the best version of Love Letter I’ve played and is an easy one to introduce to new players or to break out early or late on a game night.

It also did a nice tweak to the artwork making the game a bit more diverse in its presentation and that’s appreciated.

Honorable Mentions

#409 – Sprawlopolis: It’s fitting that the second game I sold and regretted getting rid of also appears on this list. Just like Arle, I felt I had played this one enough and sold it. Then after a little while I began thinking of how much I’d like a small game like this to take along with me. I reacquired a copy and have since get Agropolis, all the expansions, and I just received Natropolis earlier this year. I really like the mix and match aspect to these games.

This isn’t my favorite Button Shy game to solo. But it is one I regularly will take with me places. I do think of it as a solo game. I know you can play with up to 4 players, but I think the game is just a great solo game. Maybe 2 players. I wouldn’t likely find myself pulling this out on our regular group game night.

#434 – Project L: Project L is one of those games I saw online and went, that’s neat. I like polyominos and the colorful candy look to these drew me in. I thought the puzzle was neat so I picked up a copy of it. I then learned this was the retail copy and didn’t have any expansions or anything in them like the deluxe Kickstarter ones I had seen previously. But I didn’t care. The puzzle was fun. The solo is consistently tough and I have not won it yet.

Boardcubator (the publisher) unfortunately went out of business last year and in doing so liquidated their inventory and so I picked up a deluxe copy with all the expansions and I’ve really enjoyed them. It’s a shame they went under, but they did just have a successful Kickstarter to bring back Project L. I don’t know how much they’ll still be around, but I was able to pick up the last bits of the game I wasn’t able to get from the last order.

501-600

This one was hard because honestly I only have two games in this section that I truly still like. The rest I either haven’t played or they no longer strike a cord with me.

Winner

#587 – Silver and Gold: This is a solid little roll and write that we like a lot. It plays quick, it’s got fun decisions, and in a 2p game, really feels like the decisions space is really tight and close.

My one complaint with the game is the trees often feel like they’re hard to cycle to get good points out of them in only 2p. We could probably remove one card from the row after each round or something to simulate a player. Which I might try next time.

But in terms of a quick and easy game to play, this one fits the bill.

Honorable Mention

#539 – Queendomino: I’ve only played Queendomino once. I’ve played Kingdomino a few times and I liked what Queendomino added to the formula. It is on my list of games to play soon because I want to check if it’s still one I enjoy enough to keep.

The puzzle is definitely more interesting in Queendomino as the market of cards you can buy and the additional knights add a neat layer to the plan and lets you modify your map a bit more than being stuck with whatever tiles come out in the draft.

I would also be missing an opportunity to plug my 3D printable insert that fits all of the -domino games into the Queendomino box. You can get your own copy here. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5194962

#529 – Sushi Go: This is weird. I don’t really like Sushi Go itself anymore. I mean not the game, but the object. Once Sushi Go Party came out I didn’t see a reason (besides portability) to own the original. Party just has all the same game plus more. We haven’t played this game in a long time as I’ve just kind of gotten bored of it, but we did start using it to play Go Fish with my kid because it’s a bit more fun than just using a regular deck of cards. I did also join a game of it on Board Game Arena and I think it works pretty well on there. I might let it drift out of my physical collection because I can still play it there.

But when looking at this section of the top 1000 games, it is definitely my 3rd favorite as this is one I would definitely play if someone asked.

Ok hopefully I won’t take another month to get the next post of this out where I’ll look at the top 601-800 games to find my favorites in there as well.
